Montevideo and Canelones have a joint busing transportation system called STM (Sistema de Transporte de Metropolitano).¹ Maldonado busing companies have their own separate busing systems and prepaid cards.² Buying an STM prepaid card will save you 10% on all fares, you can ride a second bus for free within the hour and your credit doesn’t expire.

¹STM cards are available to underage students wearing their uniform during school hours. It allows them to quickly and easily get on their bus and it keeps a permanent record of their travels.
²CODESA and Maldonado Turismo are the only companies that issue prepaid cards in Maldonado. The former has the largest busing network in the area ranging from Piriápolis, San Carlos to Balneario Buenos Aires and it also offers a 10% additional credit with every purchase with no expiration dates.
