
The Civic Registry (Registro Civil) in Montevideo is the sole office responsible for registering foreign Birth, Marriage, Death, Adoption and Acknowledgement Certificates and Divorce Sentences in Uruguayan format.
Administrative errors can occur based on a typo, a misinterpretation, a translation error or an error on the certificate itself. Processing times will vary based on the amendment request and the submitted documentation.
Amendment applications for written certificates take at least 4 months and can extend for several more months. Applications for digital certificates take at least 2 months and receive quicker processing.
The following is required:
- Copy of the certificate with the error
- Amendment form (it also allows you to give a representative power of attorney to process the application).
- ID photocopy featuring correct name.
- Proof of the correct name (Uruguayan Birth Certificate or foreign Birth Certificate + Apostille + Uruguayan Translation + Notary’s Copy of the applicant, Uruguayan translator’s letter or consular letter).
