
You can apply for a provisional ID card valid for up to 180 days and renewable once for the same time period.¹ It has less requirements than temporary residency and you can upgrade it to either temporary or permanent residency if you decide to extend your stay in Uruguay.

- Advice on required foreign documents:
- Police Clearance Certificate + Apostille from birth country and from those where you lived for over 180 days during the 5 year period preceding your arrival to Uruguay (for second provisional ID card).
- Vaccination history (for second provisional ID card).
- Birth Certificate + Apostille.
- Marriage Certificate + Apostille.
- Obtaining the required Uruguayan documents:
- Uruguayan signed letter from temporary employer, academic institution, religious organization or sports club.
- Uruguayan Notary´s Certificate validating your sponsor´s letter.
- Uruguayan Vaccination Certificate.
- Uruguayan Translation for passport.
- Uruguayan Translation for Marriage/Birth Certificates + Apostilles.
- Uruguayan Birth Certificate (for permanent resident ID card).
- Uruguayan Marriage Certificate (for residency application).
- Submission of documents and information updates before the ID office.
- Interpreting and scheduling assistance with local offices.
- Free bus pass.
- Free (birth, marriage, divorce, etc.) certificate registration (required for permanent resident IDs and other procedures).
- Procurement of Uruguayan translator and notary documents.
¹The ID office (National Civilian Identification Agency or DNIC by its acronym in Spanish) works separately from Immigration, which doesn´t issue IDs.
