Importing your pet depends on the Uruguayan Ministry of Farming (MGAP) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

An International Veterinary Certificate issued by a veterinarian registered with the USDA is required and must be sent via email to the MGAP 48 hours in advance.

You must provide the following:

  • Medical examination (done within the last 10 days) indicating good health, up-to-date medical treatment, and authorization to travel to Uruguay.
  • Deworming and treatment against external parasites (medication and date of application) (dated within the last 15 days).
  • Rabies vaccination (dated more than 21 days prior).
  • Treatment for hydatid cyst with praziquantel (for dogs only) (dated between 72 hours and 30 days prior).
  • Clinical examination confirming that your dog does not have Leishmaniasis (only applicable in countries where the disease is active).
  • Microchip (for dogs only).

I recommend enrolling your child in a private school to ensure a quick and easy process.

They will be able to easily transfer to a public school the following year with their Uruguayan academic record.

  • Everyone has the same right to education in Uruguay.
  • Minors must be enrolled in an educational institution; homeschooling is illegal and frowned upon.
  • The tradition of free, compulsory, and secular education was established to educate and unify the population after the Uruguayan Civil War (1839-1851). It is deeply rooted in the country’s culture, like a second family, and is one of the pillars of Uruguayan society.

Requirements to access a rental contract:

  • Passport.
  • Proof of Uruguayan address.
  • Retirement letter, Work letter, or Accountant’s Certificate + Apostille.
  • Uruguayan rental insurance (Renter’s insurance).

Renter’s insurance

  • Your income must be three times the rent amount.
  • Landlords prefer it to a security deposit because the insurance company performs a tenant verification.
  • It can be obtained with the help of an insurance broker.

Only a Uruguayan customs broker can import your personal belongings. The process must begin before your arrival in Uruguay.

Customs requires a deposit to authorize the import. This deposit will be refunded upon obtaining your permanent residency.

These are the requirements:

It is done online and requires the following:

  • Uruguayan ID card.
  • Academic transcript + Apostille.
  • Diploma (front and back) + Apostille.

It is done online and requires the following:

  • Uruguayan ID card.
  • Medical degree validated by the Uruguayan Department of Education.
Uruguayan Department of Health

It requires permanent residency and the tests for obtaining a firearms permit are conducted at authorized shooting ranges.

I recommend the IPDC shooting school (they have English-speaking staff).

These are required documents:

  • Uruguayan permanent resident ID card + Photocopy
  • ID photo (2.5 cm × 2.5 cm).
  • Proof of Uruguayan address.
  • Uruguayan criminal background check.
  • Uruguayan income certificate.

The IPDC assists with the following requirements:

  • Uruguayan medical examination (2000 UYU).
  • Uruguayan psychological examination (2000 UYU).
  • Firearms test (2000 UYU).
  • Issuance of firearms license and carry permit (2000 UYU).

IPDC Firearm School:

Legal citizenship does NOT grant the right to travel as a Uruguayan.

This is a constitutional issue (requiring a two-thirds vote in Congress) that has no solution in the near future.

Legal citizenship can be obtained after 5 years (single applicant) or 3 years (applicant with family in Uruguay) of permanent residence.

  • Citizenship is granted by the Electoral Commission, which determines the required documentation on a case-by-case basis.
  • The right to vote begins three years after citizenship is granted.
  • Applicants must speak Spanish and visit the Electoral Commission without an interpreter.

The following is required:

  • Birth Certificate registered with the Uruguayan Civic Registry.
  • Birth/Marriage Certificate proving relationship with a Uruguayan citizen (if applicable).
  • Immigration Certificate.
  • Physical presence of 183 days per year or more.
  • Proof of income.
  • Proof of studies and academic record (students).
  • Medical history with medical visits at least every 6 months.
  • Additional documents may be requested.
  • Witnesses over 25 years of age, Uruguayan citizens by birth who have known the applicant for 3 to 5 years (relatives, employers, employees, military personnel, and public employees are not eligible).
  • Documents from private institutions must be certified by a Uruguayan notary.
